I enjoyed your short article on the Thoreau papers in the January/February issue (“Thoreau’s Math,” Finally). However, the picture seems to show a variation of Euclid’s algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor of 312 and 504 (the answer is twenty-four). It definitely is not the solution to the problem described in the text.
