Diversity: Skin Deep?

November 27th, 2012

I applaud the work of Damon Owens ’88 with the Theology of the Body Institute (“Sex and God,” Classes, September/October). His comments about being the odd man out at Brown resonated with me, an odd woman out, largely because of our conservative Christian beliefs. I am thrilled to hear that he has kept true to these tenets and has made them his life’s passion.

Although not a Catholic, as an American coming from an American school in Egypt with students from all different walks of life, I thought that coming to Brown would be a similarly diverse experience. Brown seemed very tolerant on the surface until it came to my conservative Christian beliefs. Needless to say, I am glad to see Brown graduates with such conservative beliefs as Damon Owens’s, and I am even more surprised that the BAM covered them!
