Lillian Hicock Wentworth writes: “The outstanding event this year was the retirement of my daughter Francie Wentworth Claflin ’74 from the military. The ceremony at Hanscom Air Force Base near Boston was impressive. Around 200 friends arrived from as far as Virginia. There was a marching band, speeches, awards, gifts (I got a large bouquet of roses!), and food. The program pamphlet included a picture of Francie with Colin Powell.” Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass., honored Lillian at its commencement by naming archives for her.

Class secretary and archivist Beatrice Wattman Miller reports: “Pembroke class of 1935 had its 69th reunion luncheon on May 29 at the Brown Faculty Club. Attending were Dorothy Markoff Nelson and myself. Lillian Hicock Wentworth writes that she had knee replacements in 2002 and now walks with ‘no pain, no cane.’ She is still driving and volunteers at Thayer Academy most mornings. Her son Larry is an attorney with the Supreme Court of Micronesia, and Frances ’74 is a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel at Hanscom Field, in Mass. Lillian has three grandchildren. Priscilla Bennett Johnson is in a nursing home in Evansville, Ind., and Marion Nield Fairbrother has lost her sight and resides in a nursing home in Worcester, Mass.

“Sara Dowty Toney will be teaching water aerobics at her local pool this summer for the fourteenth year. She also is active in the Unitarian Church in Bethesda, Md., where she lives.

“Mary Hobby Waite Greenlaw is living at an assisted-living home. Her second husband, Arnold Greenlaw, died in April. Her son Bob Waite and her granddaughter now handle her affairs and care arrangements, her daughter-in-law Gwen informs us. Mary still enjoys getting cards from old friends. Pembroke reunion chairwoman Alma Stone Sich reports: "Kuo Ping Chou's brother informs us that for the past year Kuo has been in a nursing home and quite content.

"The following out-of-towners hope to attend our 65th reunion: Mary Fullerton Oleksiw; Kay Jodoin Beckley; Sara Bloom Paul; Lillian Hicock Wentworth; Natalie Basford Fancher and her husband, Brainard; Esme McIntyre Bauxar and her husband, Joe; and Sallie Dowty Toney and her husband. Sallie is very busy: This is her tenth year teaching water aerobics for elders. In April she created a service at the River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda, Md., to celebrate the 151st anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. She serves on the 40th anniversary committee of her church and will help present two services. She is also doing a book review of the Poisonwood Bible."

John Grossman, of West Palm Beach, Fla., writes: "My romance with Jean Alexander that began in the spring of my freshman year ended with her passing after sixty-one beautiful years of marriage. We never had a single argument. We lost our son, Jeff, at age forty-five. I enjoy our daughter, Judy Molinsky, and my four grandchildren. I enjoyed a productive business life with Grossman's and later directed the mortage-lending division of Homeowners Federal Savings until my 70th birthday. I am now involved in direct, short-term lending for a private group."

Al Kessler, of Salt Lake City, Utah, reports that during 1998-1999 he conducted a ambitious programs and projects as president of the United Nations Association of Utah. "When Brainard Fancher and Natalie Basford Fancher, of Ithaca, N.Y., attended a convention in Salt Lake City," he writes, "I hosted them on a tour of the Wasatch Mountains."

Welcome notes were read from Priscilla Bennett Johnson and Carolyn Troy Watts, who indicated how active she is with music, studies, and entertainment. We're sorry to hear of the deaths of Miriam Snow Rideout on Dec. 17, 1998, and Pearl Miller Wilks on Jan. 31, 1999."
