How to describe our forty-fifth reunion and President Ruth Simmons's first? Just wonderful! With many people back, some for the first time since graduation, we ate, danced, schmoozed, marched, and left with renewed spirit for Brown.

We met at Harkness House for the weekend's first event and then moved on to the Brown Bear Buffet in the Sharpe Refectory, where we reserved the Chancellor's Dining Room. This gave us a chance to have our own party within a party. Memorabilia from classmates was spread out to check the past and compare to the present. Campus Dance, attended by thousands, was beautiful, with bands of all kinds playing around the Green.

Saturday brought the University forums for study and reflection. A new event for us this year was a post-luncheon class seminar moderated by class president Marie Kirn. The discussion focused on the question "Is there a silver lining in 9/11?" Bob Minnerly, Gus White, Ted Parrish, Jane Weingarten,, and Rosemary Carroll each presented ideas and then the floor was opened for comments. Everybody found this meeting thought-provoking and worth continuing in the future.

Bruce Yeutter presented the class gift to the University. As of this writing our gift totals $326,000. We're hoping to exceed our goal of 65 percent participation.

Sunday brought some clouds, but no rain as in '82. You may remember that stormy weekend - our twenty-fifth. President Ruth Simmons gave us a look at her plans to shape Brown for the future. Late that night we gathered at Olives to wind down, but discovered a graduation party in full swing with much dancing. Some joined in the event to cheer on the almost-new alumni, while others enjoyed a more peaceful stroll on the river during WaterFire.

Several class members marched in the parade on Monday, a slightly cloudy day. We all said good-bye and agreed to return sooner than the fiftieth.
