When the U.S. team won the first Olympic gold medal ever for women's hockey in February, helping to celebrate were two Brown players: Katie King '97 and Tara Mounsey '00.

The world's best: Tara Mounsey '00 and Katie King '97 waiting to take the puck for Team U.S.A.

Although neither scored during the gold-medal game against Canada - which the U.S. team won, 3-1 - King earlier notched a hat trick as part of a 10-0 hammering of Japan. That team included another Brown player, Chie-chie Sakuma '94. On the other side of the gold-medal game, a fourth University veteran, Becky Kellar '97, skated for the Canadian team, which took the silver. As a result, Brown had players competing for half of the six countries that fielded women's hockey teams.

King, the offensive star of the group, is Brown's all-time women's hockey scorer and was the softball team's ace pitcher during her years on College Hill.

Representing the University on the sidelines in Nagano was Margaret "Digit" Murphy, who coached all four Olympians at Brown. Murphy paused in her duties as the Bears' head coach to glide into a role as color commentator and player interviewer for Turner Network Television.
