"Basically the policies of the last eight years have been to define torture out of existence," New Yorker staff writer Philip Gourevitch said at the Watson Institute in September. Gourevitch, who also edits the Paris Review, was promoting his new book, Standard Operating Procedure, about inmate abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, which he cowrote with Errol Morris.
