Watson Institute associate professor Nina Tannenwald won the prestigious Lepgold Book Prize for The Nuclear Taboo: The United States and the Non-Use of Nuclear Weapons Since 1945.... After switching from fuel oil to natural gas, Brown cut its carbon emissions by nearly 8 percent last fiscal year as part of President Ruth Simmons's initiative to reduce the University's carbon footprint.... Brown signed an agreement of mutual understanding for future collaboration with Spain's Instituto Empresa, one of the world's most distinguished business schools.... The University raised $1.5 million for The Fund for the Education of the Children of Providence, which Brown created for the city's school system in the wake of a 2007 report from the University's Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice; the report found that Brown had benefited from the slave trade and should make amends by working to improve the city's schools.... Also thanks to the slavery and justice report, Brown will graduate ten MAT students trained to work in urban schools; in return for free tuition, the graduates will work in the Providence school system.
