Some months ago I happened to be on the Brown campus and stopped outside the white tent on Lincoln Field to listen to the Brown Alumni Association Awards Ceremonies going on inside. After the ceremonies, I approached Joe Fernandez '85, whom I had never met, and talked to him for a few minutes ("Protecting the American Dream," Features section).

I congratulated him on the excellent campaign he had run in the Democratic primary for Rhode Island attorney general and said he must be very proud of it. And then I told him a little story: Abraham Lincoln had lost every elective campaign he had ever run except the last one—when he ran for the Presidency of the United States.

Mr. Fernandez smiled, extended his hand, and said: "Thank you very much for telling me that story. I'll remember it!"

And I'll remember Mr. Fernandez, especially because by a stroke of fate I had the opportunity to say a good thing to a good man at a good time.
