Two icons of African letters—Nigerian poet Gabriel Okara, pictured here, and novelist and poet Chinua Achebe, a Brown professor—shared the stage of the George Houston Bass theater on September 24 to read from their work and discuss the relationship between voice and memory in poetry. Although the two had never appeared together, they shared similar memories of Nigeria's civil war, images of which pervade the poems they read.
