January 19, 2012—S.J. Perelman ’25 may have dropped out of Brown before finishing his studies, but it was on College Hill that he honed his humor. In fact, the antics of such Marx brothers movies as Horse Feathers and Monkey Business can be traced back to the Brown Jug, where Perelman worked as cartoonist, writer, and, eventually, editor-in-chief.

CUNY-TV recently unearthed a rare television interview with Perelman. After describing himself in the interview as "forcibly transported" from New York City to Providence at the age of six months, Perelman outlines his happy childhood there and his years at Brown, where, he says, "I spent most of my effort on—instead of books—working for the Brown Jug, which was the college magazine of that epoch. Eventually, in my last year there, I began to do a little writing as well."
