The Blizzard of 1978 buried campus beneath more than two feet of snow and paralyzed southern New England. Rather than wait for help, students launched Operation Digout, clearing pathways and streets before plows could arrive. The flu swept through dorms, and classes were cancelled for nearly a week.

Gosh, what a first evening that was, walking around watching cars getting stuck, trying to get home. And helping push them. One guy wouldn't admit he wasn't going to drive home, and got his car stuck two or three times at least. And the three-story snow slide at some frat. And.... Our class of '79 FB page had a number of reminiscences.

Ah yes - the snow slide was out of the second floor bathroom window of Theta Delta Chi. It was made by packing dresser drawers with snow to make "bricks" - then stacked. Two of my friends lifted me up and out the window with my skis on so I could ski down it.... The things you do... Being a Sigma Chi, we found it more challenging to do sailor dives (head first, hands by your side) into the snow banks. Now THAT was really stupid!
