The Last on Willie

January 7th, 2013

Do you have room for one more “Willie” story (“Willie’s Last Game,” Mail Room, November/December)? I was at the game on that fateful day, and I have a strong recollection of what happened.

The picture you published was definitely Willie. My recollection was that he was always drunk or near drunk, and was thoroughly enjoying himself. He frequently traded barbs with spectators as he rooted for the team and tried to lead the crowd in cheers. I was in the stands, only a few rows from the top of the exit ramp from which Willie fell, and I saw him disappear to the ramp below. He had just responded to a heckler by shouting something like “Why don’t you put an egg in your shoe and beat it?”

Your article brought back a vivid memory of that day.
