Bittersweet Recognition

January 7th, 2014

I was delighted to read the article by Stephanie Grace ’87 (“Banker to the Nation,” Elms, November/December). Delighted yet bittersweet, because my husband, Herschel (Professor Herschel Grossman), who died in 2004, cannot share Janet Yellen’s joy at reaching the top of her profession and achieving the dream that was incubated in his class many years ago.

I remember Yellen ’67 when, as the featured lecturer, she returned to the economics department for the annual Fain Lecture in October 1995. It was obvious how important Brown was in her development as an outstanding economist and how much she loved the subject in which she would make extraordinary contributions.
