I am responding to your request for information about the creator of the 1949 Santa snowman pictured on page 45 of the November/December issue (“Santa Pause,” Classes). It is quite likely that my father, Peter Robinson Coffin ’45, created this snowman. Around 1949, while he was working on his PhD in philosophy, he was a teaching assistant for philosophy professor Vincent Tomas. I have in my possession a Santa Claus carved out of wood that is almost identical. My father was an accomplished artist who frequently made figures out of snow for my sister and me.

Peter R. Coffin ’74
