More Kelly

July 2nd, 2014

The March/April BAM issue covered a fulsome array of opinions about the October 29 Kelly speech fiasco (“Kelly Protest,” Mail Room). I cannot celebrate Brown’s 250th except to laud the medical school. Otherwise, the incessant juggernaut of political correctness and its flagrant attacks on Brown’s basic values take center stage.

I wonder why “community” groups were invited to attend Kelly’s lecture. Were the Providence police likely to emulate Chief Kelly’s policies? Did anyone from the Taubman Center insist that attendees behave and not mimic any unruly students? The committee in its next report should convey the full list of organizations invited to attend. Some surely receive federal, state, and, perhaps, local funds. In essence, taxpayer money is being used to assist in the squelching of freedom of speech at Brown.
