Art or Craft?

December 22nd, 2014

Sabrina Gschwandtner ‘00 pushes the boundary between traditional craft and fine art. For the past five years, she has been making quilts. But instead of fabric, she works with film footage—mainly from documentaries about women making textile crafts—stitching film strips into classic quilt patterns. “Hung in wall-mounted lightboxes, the work glows with the softness of stained glass,” one reviewer wrote in the Village Voice. Her work is in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the RISD Museum and can be seen at the Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles from February 21 to April 4.
