I lived in Rhode Island for many years, and although I am now in a Philadelphia retirement community to be near my kids, I have been thrilled to read about the progress Brown grads are making in the schools and in the management of Central Falls (“Saving Central Falls,” January/February).

I taught music in the Providence schools for several years and am well aware of the need for thoughtful education for the less-advantaged.

How can you write an article about saving Central Falls and not mention Robert G. Flanders ’71?

The focus of the story on new attempts by Central Falls to spark economic development—and not on the details of the city’s bankruptcy—was not intended to slight the work of Robert Flanders ’71, who as the Central Falls state receiver appointed in 2011 by Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee ’75 oversaw the difficult task of closing a $6 million annual deficit and guiding the city out of bankruptcy proceedings.
