After the Bears fell behind, 6-1, Jeff Lawler ’00 hit two homers – one a grand slam – to cap a particularly thrilling 12-8 victory over Holy Cross on May 2.
Ranked number one in the East, the Bears beat Princeton by more than two boat lengths, capturing the Content Cup for the first time in four years and finishing its first undefeated season since 1994.
The defending NCAA champions posted an undefeated regular-season record heading into the Eastern sprints in mid-May.
After finishing its season as the number-one point scorer in the region, the team was defeated at the zone championships. Amanda Forte ’02, however, went on to win an individual national championship for the second year in a row.
After finishing sixth at the Ivy Championships, the men came in eleventh out of eighteen teams at the New England Division I Championships in Fairfield, Connecticut. Kevin Buchert ’03 finished tenth overall.
The women finished third at the Ivy Championships, tying rival Dartmouth with a two-round score of 707. Tara Fiscella ’03 placed eighth overall.
Men’s Lacrosse 9-6
Ranked sixteenth nationally, the men finished the season by beating the University of Massachusetts, 14-10. Michael Monfett ’01, with forty goals and fifteen assists, and Jim Mormile ’01, with twenty-five goals and five assists, were both chosen All-Ivy for the first time.
Women’s Lacrosse 6-8
Earning All-Ivy honors were Cristi Gigon ’00 and Keely McDonald ’00. Gigon finished her Brown career with sixty-four goals and thirty-two assists, while McDonald racked up sixty-six goals and twenty assists during her years on College Hill.
Led by pitcher and third baseman Tami Parrott ’01, the women finished 6-6 in the Ivy League. Catcher and third baseman Liz Lefler ’03 was named Rookie of the Week in late April.
Men’s Tennis 12-11
An April 21 victory over defending Ivy champion Harvard was the first Bear defeat of the Crimson since 1987. The team finished fourth in the Ivy League.
Women’s Tennis 3-20
This young and often-overmatched squad finished the season last in the Ivy Standings.
