Former president of Brazil, now a Brown professor-at-large. Lived in exile from from 1964 to 1968 after criticizing Brazil’s military dictators and later helped establish the Social Democratic Party.

Malcolm G. Chace

Doctor of Humane Letters

Rhode Island business leader known for his support of the arts and social services. With his wife, Elizabeth Zopfi Chace ’59, has served on the Corporation’s Committee on Bio-Medical Affairs and the Medical School Board of Overseers.

Shirin Ebadi

Doctor of Laws

Iranian lawyer and educator. Received 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for her human-rights activism in Iran. Helped found the Association for Support of Children’s Rights in Iran.

Paul Farmer

Doctor of Medical Science

Medical anthropologist and infectious disease specialist. Since 1986 has split time between Haiti and Harvard Medical School. Subject of Tracy Kidder’s recent book, Mountain Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World.

Suzan-Lori Parks

Doctor of Letters

First African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in playwriting, for Topdog/Underdog. Also writes screenplays, including Spike Lee’s Girl 6. Teaches at the California Institute of the Arts.

Jane Pauley

Doctor of Humane Letters

NBC broadcaster for almost thirty years. Cohosted Today for thirteen years. In 1991 launched Real Life with Jane Pauley, which later became Dateline NBC. Left Dateline last year, and this year will launch the syndicated talk show The Jane Pauley Show.

Stephen Robert ’62

Doctor of Humane Letters

Brown’s chancellor since 1998. First became a trustee in 1984 and was elected to the Board of Fellows in 1994. Former chairman and CEO of Oppenheimer Group Inc. and now chairman of Robert Capital Management, LLC.

Judith Rodin

Doctor of Laws

Former president of Penn and the first female president of any Ivy League school. Former professor and provost at Yale. Scholar of the relationship between psychological and biological processes in human health and behavior.

Garry B. Trudeau

Doctor of Letters

Doonesbury cartoonist. Comic strip won 1975 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. With Elizabeth Swados created off-Broadway satirical review Rap Master Ronnie in 1988. Contributing essayist for Time.
