The admission office reviewed 15,153 applications from students hoping to join the class of ’07 and sent acceptance letters to 2,258; it was the first test of the need-blind policy, which requires that admission decisions be made without considering financial need.... Brown and seven other universities filed an amicus curiae brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve the University of Michigan’s right to consider race as a factor in admissions....
