June 16, 2008—In the Heights, the New York City–based musical written by Quiara Alegría Hudes ’04 MFA and coproduced by Jill Furman '90, took home top honors at the Tony Awards last night, winning the prize for Best Musical. In the November/December 2007 BAM, senior writer Lawrence Goodman described the production: “An upbeat musical paean to Washington Heights, the largely Hispanic northern Manhattan neighborhood, the show features an infectious score by Lin-Manuel Miranda that combines rap, salsa, and merengue.” Miranda’s score won a Tony, as did the show’s choreography and orchestration. By the end of the night, In the Heights had won four Tonys; it was nominated for thirteen. Read Goodman's article about Hudes here. Visit the Tony Award site here. |
