May 8, 2008—In the latest accolade for Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch ’82, Time magazine named him one of its Top 100 for 2008. In the magazine, CBS anchor Katie Couric says that, thanks to Pausch's recent publication of the best-seller The Last Lecture the continuing popularity of his famous lecture on YouTube, "millions of us now feel part of Randy's extended family—and that it isn't too late to listen, learn and really live." In April, ABC journalist Diane Sawyer also aired a one-hour special profiling Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon professor of computer science who is battling pancreatic cancer and who became well-known last fall for what he believed would be his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon. Millions watched video of the lecture, "Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," on YouTube, and Pausch became an ABC News Person of the Week. The Last Lecture expands on this talk. In late March, ABC News posted this update on Pausch's condition: Randy Pausch … has been on palliative chemotherapy, intended to slow the growth of the tumors. The chemo worked well until two weeks ago, when side effects began causing congestive heart and renal failure, resulting in hospitalization. He is now at home, getting his strength back. Recently he wrote this note in his blog, "So I rest, and I rest, and I rest. The really good news is that at least based on blood markers the tumors are being very chivalrous and not taking advantage of this opportunity to run wild, before I'm strong enought to fight back."
