March 6, 2008—The National Book Critics Circle announced today that Edwidge Danticat ’93 MFA has won the group's 2007 award for autobiography for her memoir Brother, I'm Dying. The book tells the story of her father, Marican Danticat, a Haitian immigrant who settled in New York City, and her uncle Joseph Danticat, who died in Miami's Krome Detention Center while waiting for immigration officials to decide on his request to be allowed to live in the United States. The National Book Critics Award is given on behalf of more than 700 book reviewers nationwide.
