|Calling All Alums|
I'd like to extend an invitation to all Brown alums to participate in "Advice From a Former Student," a sound piece commissioned for the new Stephen Roberts '62 Campus Center at Faunce Hall. Emanating from a highly directional speaker installed in Faunce Arch, anonymous voices of alums from all possible classes will offer advice—be it practical, philosophical, heartfelt, or absurd.
The project is inspired by my own time at Brown as an undergrad and reinforced by my more recent years teaching in the visual art department. I've thought often about the times I felt flummoxed by a decision, whether about my courses, my love life, my beliefs, or my future, and how I craved access to another point of view from someone who might understand what I was going through. My hope is that "Advice From a Former Student" will provide a moment of perspective: perhaps some clarity, some comic relief, and some comfort from feeling part of a continuum of others who have literally "been there."
I will bring a small team to Providence this May to help record very short interviews during Commencement Weekend, and we are currently scheduling volunteers who would like to participate. Please see my website at www.ninakatchadourian.com to read more about the project and to sign up. And if you're not planning on coming to Brown this May, we may be able to interview you in your area in the next few months as well.
I hope to hear from you. You are the soul and voice of this piece—what advice would YOU like to offer?
