Thank you so much for the marvelous feature on Professor of History Karl Jacoby in the September/October issue ("Historian of Memory"). Though as a history editor and a friend I have known Karl for years, your article revealed more about the origins of his intellectual interests than this humble, soft-spoken historian had ever told me. I just want to add that, since the publication of this piece, his book, Shadows at Dawn
, has won the Beveridge Award of the American Historical Association, the most prestigious prize given by this organization. Brown is lucky indeed to have a historian and writer of Karl Jacoby's caliber.
