Apr, 2026

Diane Winston Crocker ’48 ScM, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Chicago; Jul. 22. She graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1952 as one of only four women in her class. She was a senior surgical pathologist at Brigham & Women’s and a professor at Harvard Medical School for a decade before moving on to leadership positions at Temple University, University of Southern California, and the University of Tennessee at Memphis, where she was chairman of pathology, the first female department chair. She completed her career at Cook County Hospital in Chicago as chairman of anatomic pathology. During her career she authored more than 200 medical publications, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from BU School of Medicine, and was on the editorial board of the American Journal of Surgical Pathology for many years. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, including daughter Anne Crocker Hefter ’88, and five grandchildren.

Dean R. Staats ’46, ’48 AM, of Media, Pa.; Apr. 14. He was a retired actuary and a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He enjoyed traveling, the arts, bowling, and tennis. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; a daughter-in-law; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Janice K. Mullaney ’48 ScM, of Irondale, Ala.; Oct. 4. She worked as a research assistant at the Harvard School of Public Health before marrying and having a family. She is survived by five children and their spouses; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 

 

 

Nov, 2019

Daniel Fairchild ’45, ’48 ScM, of Barrington, R.I.; June 27. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Brown for his master’s degree. He worked at FRAM for 30 years and retired as a vice president. When he left the company he embarked on a second career teaching engineering at Roger Williams University. He enjoyed spending summers on Hog Island, playing golf, cruising in Europe and Alaska, and sailing in the Caribbean and Maine. He was an Eagle Scout and remained active with Boy Scouts of America. He was also an active member of Central Congregational Church, where he served as deacon. He is survived by five children, eight grandchildren, including Carl F. Olson ’02 and Neil F. Olson ’05; and three great-grandchildren.

 

May, 2019

Howard S. Young ’48 PhD, of Kingsport, Tenn.; Nov. 27. He joined Tennessee Eastman Co., a division of Eastman Kodak Co., in 1948 and held executive appointments until retiring as director of research laboratories in 1989. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a 75-year member of the American Chemical Society, and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Catalysis Society, Sigma Xi, and Phi Beta Kappa. He is survived by seven children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Anne Maven Young ’44, ’48 ScM, of Kingsport, Tenn.; Sept. 14. She was a homemaker and community volunteer. Active in the Girl Scouts of America, she was awarded her 60-year membership pin and was president of the Appalachian Girl Scout Council for six years. She was also an active member of the American Association of University Women and the Friends of the Kingsport Public Library, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and served as state treasurer for the Tennessee Ornithological Society. She is survived by her husband, Howard ’48 PhD; seven children and their spouses; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
