The Toronto Blue Jays picked Matt Nuzzo '09 in the 24th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft; he is the eighteenth Brown player chosen since MLB began its draft in 1965. Nuzzo has been the starting second baseman with the Auburn (N.Y.) Blue Jays of the Short-Season-A New York-Penn League.... Mark Gormley '11, who played for the Hyannis Mets this summer, was selected as an alternate for the West Division squad at the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game played in August at Fenway Park.... The Cape Cod Baseball League honored Arnold Mycock '50, a 2000 inductee into the CCBL Hall of Fame, for sixty years of involvement in the league. The trophy for the league's annual champion each year was named the Arnold Mycock Award.... At the Brown Football Association's annual Kickoff Dinner at Rhode Island Country Club, Chris Berman '77 and Ross Greenburg '77 were presented with the 2009 Joslin Award for outstanding contributions to Brown football.... Anna Willard '06 won the 1,500-meter run at the London Grand Prix. At the IAAF Golden League Track & Field meet in Paris, France, Willard earned the highest-profile win of her career with a come-from-behind victory in the 800-meter event. At the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Willard qualified for the World Championships in two events, the steeplechase and the 1,500-meter run.... Former tennis standout Jamie Cerretani '04 improved his world doubles ranking to forty-sixth by posting wins at both the French Open and Wimbledon; he was 1–1 at each tournament.... The gold-medal-winning 1998 U.S. women's Olympic hockey team, which featured Katie King '97 and Tara Mounsey '03, will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.... Former hockey goalie Yann Danis '04 has signed a contract with the NHL's New Jersey Devils. Danis spent last season with the New York Islanders.... Former men's hockey coach Herb Hammond (1983-88) died of cancer on July 23 at his home in Fort Gratiot, Michigan.... Brianne Goutal '11 became the youngest rider ever to win the $75,000 RV Sales of Broward Grandprix of Lake Placid horse show.... Julia Robinson '11, Carly Arison '12, Heather Arison '12, Megan Tuohy '12, and Susan Restrepo '11 of the women's golf team were named to the National Golf Coaches Association 2009 All-American Scholar Team.... Swimmer Dan Ricketts '09 was named a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, becoming Brown's first-ever swimmer (men's or women's) to earn Academic All-America recognition.
