Remebering Marty

July 19th, 2012

I was sorry to read of the passing of longtime music professor Marty Fischer (Obituaries, May/June). I was a music major and orchestra member from 1965 to 1969. The orchestra was a central part of my Brown experience and was probably the most enjoyable musical experience of my life. Whenever I picture Marty conducting, I picture his face tightening up in tension relative to how out of tune we were—an effective technique not encountered in other conductors. He was very supportive of my musical and personal efforts. I have fond memories of a Thanksgiving dinner at his house; he invited orchestra members who were staying in town, which also turned into my only touch football experience.
