If you can get past the suggestive chapter titles (“Don’t Forget Protection: Essential Gear for the Guys”), food tips (“So to help you navigate the pitfalls of over-indulgence, here’s the Cool Chick’s Calorie Counter”), and fashion advice (“Also wear some kind of cap. Don’t fret about hat hair.”), The Cool Chick’s Guide to Baseball by Lisa Martin ’90 (Gibbs Smith) is a surprisingly clear introduction to the sport for anyone unable to explain the Infield Fly Rule. Sure, there’s some wishful thinking—the trend now is toward baggy uniforms, not “the tightest pants possible”—but Martin knows that the distance between the pitcher’s mound and home plate is “the equivalent of six convertible coupes bumper to bumper.”
