New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize–winner Thomas Friedman spoke on campus about climate change on Earth Day in April. As he began his speech, two radical environmentalists stormed the stage and hit Friedman with a pie of green topping. Friedman briefly left the stage to clean up and returned to finish his speech. One of the protestors, a Brown student, was taken into custody and released. She has since been suspended for one semester... Also in April, Brown students organized a two-day environmental sustainability conference that included government officials, Saatchi & Saatchi global CEO Adam Werbach '95, and Clinton Global Initiative Chairman Ira Magaziner '69... Johanna Schmitt, the Stephen T. Olney Professor Natural History, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences; Schmitt is the first female scientist from Brown to be elected to the Academy... Davis Guggenheim '86, the producer and executive producer of An Inconvenient Truth, delivered the annual Casey Shearer Memorial Lecture in May; his topic was "Can Movies Be an Agent for Social Change?"
