For May Day of 1944, the Pembroke Dance Club staged a performance on the college's green. The tradition of celebrating May Day goes back to 1912 when, according to Pembroke's literary magazine, first-years "in clown suits of yellow and brown, indulged in folk dancing with the utmost abandon." Over the years, the celebration has included tumbling, pageants, and naming a "May Queen."
