Tree Doctor

November 27th, 2012

When Walter Fries ’57 majored in biology, he specialized in all things arboreal. So when the time came to prune campus trees, it sometimes made sense to hand him the chainsaw. Naturally, a Brown man of that era had to dress appropriately for any occasion, so Fries donned a sweatshirt embroidered “W. K. Fries Tree Surgeon.” This photo appeared in the November 19, 1956, Providence Journal above the caption, “Higher Education means climbing trees for Walter Fries.”
