This spring, only 9.2 percent of the nearly 29,000 applicants for the Class of 2017 received acceptance letters, the second-lowest rate ever. The class is also the most diverse in Brown’s history and contains the highest percentage of students to be the first in their family to attend college.

WHERE THEY'RE FROM
Students from all fifty states were accepted. The highest concentrations are from California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Texas.
Among the students accepted are representatives from eighty-three countries. The largest numbers hail from China, Canada, India, Korea, and the United Kingdom.

HOW SMART ARE THEY?
Ninety-five percent of admitted students are in the top 10 percent of their high school class. Forty-five percent are valedictorians or salutatorians.

GENDER DISTRIBUTION
Fifty percent are female.
Fifty percent are male.

BACKGROUNDS
Among the accepted students 17.5 percent will be the first of their family to go to college. Forty-six percent are students of color (12 percent African American, 14 percent Latino, 2 percent Native American, and 18 percent Asian).

WHAT'S THE MAJORITY GOING TO STUDY?
Fifty-eight percent intend to concentrate in the physical or life sciences.
