Give Peter Credit

March 9th, 2012

Your article about the mounting of the Marvel Gymnasium cupola atop the new Jonathan Nelson Fitness Center should have noted that Peter A. Mackie ’59 was the driving force behind the effort to salvage the clock tower when Marvel was demolished in 2002 (“Finally,” November/December). Were it not for Peter’s constant prodding and interaction with both University officials and demolition company supervisors, this irreplaceable artifact would have been lost forever. Truly, he is almost totally responsible for saving from destruction what is now the distinguishing architectural feature of Brown’s newest athletic facility.
