Peripatetic

May 23rd, 2012

It’s good to see that BAM hasn’t forgotten the peripatetic Josiah Carberry. (“Carberry Update,” Finally, March/April). He is also immortalized in my Penguin Dictionary of Psychology, now in its fourth edition, along with R. Allen & E. Reber. Not many, other than Brown alumni, grasp the seriousness of this lexicographic entry:

Psychoceramics: As conceptualized by the once and future Professor Josiah Carberry of Brown University, a highly specialized sub-discipline dealing with the crackpot in all his manifestations. The much-traveled Professor Carberry is said, like Freud, to have developed his theories largely from intensive self-examination.”
